If you're looking for a glimpse of Holland, but only have a day to explore, a trip to Lynden may be in order. If you're looking for a small, safe community to raise a family, look no further. And if you're relocating your business, you'll have trouble finding a better location and environment.

 

Lynden Washington's Dutch heritage adds a unique touch to one of the jewels of Western Washington, ideally located between Mt. Baker and Puget Sound. The community of nearly 12,000 recently celebrated Holland Days on May 2-3, 2008, featuring costumed shopkeepers and Dutch klompen dancers, plus authentic Dutch delicacies. A standard city feature is a 72 foot high windmill featuring moving blades. The windmill is a backdrop for many pictures in downtown Lynden and is also the anchor for unique shops, an indoor canal, and the community theatre.

Things to Do

If you take time to “smell the roses,” you'll enjoy the floral fragrance and beauty of downtown Lynden. Hanging baskets, flower pots, and adorn the community's sidewalks from spring through fall.

Lynden provides plenty of choices for those who prefer a relaxed pace of life, as well as those who are a bit more adventurous. Many ideas are listed in maps and brochures available at the Chamber of Commerce office – located downtown at the corner of Sixth and Front streets – from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. A Few Options

• Visit the Lynden Pioneer Museum – at 217 Front St. The museum offers a vintage collection of antique vehicles, farm equipment, and horse-drawn carriages, plus displays featuring the military, agriculture, and Front Street as it appeared many years ago.
• While you're at the museum, borrow a bicycle from the Lynden Pedal Program and take a ride. You also can obtain at the museum a bicycle map with routes through Lynden and north Whatcom County.
• Walk, bicycle or roller blade along the Jim Kaemingk Sr. Trail as it follows tree-lined Fishtrap Creek from Bender Fields into Lynden City Park.
• If you don't find enough trees there, experience old-growth cedars by walking or bicycling through Berthusen Park, located just several miles west of Lynden.
• Children getting antsy? Try some miniature golf at Dutch Village Mall or roller skating/blading at Lynden Skateway.
• Stroll through a variety of stores offering antiques and treasures.
• Go swimming, run on a treadmill or lift weights at the Lynden YMCA.
• Learn more about the area's agricultural riches while sampling berries, cheese, wine, or hazelnuts at a local farm. Call the Chamber, (360) 354-5995, for details.
• Take a ride on the Whatcom Transportation Authority's circulating bus. It gives a tour of Lynden in just 30 minutes!
• Shoot a round of golf at one of Whatcom County's numerous courses, including Homestead Golf & Country Club in Lynden and Raspberry Ridge Golf Course, just four miles south of the city.
  
• Enjoy three beautiful works of art: Phoebe Judson's painting inside the Lynden Post Office; the bright and whimsical 142-foot-long Dutch mural on the building next to the post office; and the historical mural on the wall of Grandiflora of white settlers who came up the Nooksack River to Lynden.
